Yeah, you're right. It's definitely one of those things where "Hmm... maybe I should have expected this to happen. In this particular place. Where this is what happens 100% of the time, just usually to a different population."
I actually did empathize with the Anne Rices of the world when it happened! For the first time in my life got punched in the face with how they might feel. So I guess that was my moment to, as you say, "make sense of how other people feel in a way I really can't relate to." A doozy. Ironically, empathizing didn't really change my stance. Before, I was of the firm opinion that fanfic authors should not send their fanfics to authors/actors/etc. Now I just consider myself to also be someone who doesn't want to read fanfics of my fanfics, even if I know they theoretically exist somewhere. :D Consistency!
